Is your Fireworks Night going to go with a BANG?

It’s almost November and the fireworks season is nearly upon us.

Many clubs and organisations will be opting to have a professional fireworks display company to fire the display for them in order to ensure that everything goes well.

The fireworks will look great, all and sundry will have a good time, and by hiring a professional team to do the scary work, the organisers absolve themselves from any possible insurance claim, right?

Wrong…

As organisers of the event, the club or organisation must share the responsibility for the event; this means:

- having a full risk assessment in place

- having full accountability for your guests and/or audience from the time they arrive on your premises until they finally leave the event.

“But…” I hear you say, “The fireworks display company will have public liability insurance, won’t they?”

And you’re right – any company worth their reputation WILL have public liability insurance. They should also have product liability, and it probably makes you feel very safe knowing that your guests are covered.

But bear in mind that this is only to cover any claims arising from accidents caused by the fireworks (or firing crew) themselves; it will not cover your people who are engaged in setting up the event when a marquee falls on them, it won’t cover members of your public who trip or fall as they leave the venue in the dark, there’s no cover for items of equipment which you have hired, borrowed or bought for the event, and most importantly it will not cover you if you sustain a loss due to bad weather.

The fact is that you need to approach any event you organise with the same attention to detail as any professional company; you need to be covered for all risks, you need piece of mind to know that you have covered all aspects of due diligence. Only then can you sleep peacefully in your bed during the run up, operation and debrief of a major fireworks event.

In addition, you need to have proper insurance in place so that your event is a pleasure to organise, and of course you need to select the right fireworks company to guide you and to advise you.

Fireworks Displays: 5 Tips For Cutting Your Own Rocket Sticks

Planning a fireworks display? Learn how to make your own rocket sticks from a length of wood. Custom made sticks can make your rockets fly straighter and higher – and save you money!

Tip 1:  Get The Right Materials

For this easy DIY project all you need is a table saw, blades and a straight light-weight piece of wood.

Table saw: You need a good quality saw with a high quality fence for straight cutting of narrow strips.
Blades: Buy the best quality you can afford from a woodworker shop. The best choice is a rip blade as you will be cutting along the length of the wood.
Wood: Any straight-grained wood free of knots can be used but it must be light and reasonably strong. Think pine and poplar.

Tip 2:  Know Your Table Saw (Or Get Help)

You must be able to use the table saw correctly and safely as this kind of straight cutting of narrow strips is not for the beginner. Or get a friend to do the cutting for you. Your blade must be sharp and a proper push stick must be used to push the wood through the saw. You can wax your table to make the wood move smoothly through the table saw. Never use force to get the wood through.

Tip 3:  Make Your Own Push Stick

Because you are cutting narrow strips the standard push stick bought from hardware stores may not be ideal for the job.  Rather make your own from a piece of  ¾ inch plywood.  Description of size, form and how to construct this can be found in a good fireworks e-book.

Tip 4:  You Can Use Scrap Wood

Wood from old pieces of furniture could be quite suitable for cutting rocket sticks as furniture wood is normally straight grained. Just make sure it is not to heavy and at least 2 feet (50cm) long as the ripping of shorter pieces of wood may create problems. Often such wood can be found free from places such as furniture manufacturers or even upholsterers.

Tip 5:  Always Wear Your Safety Gear

The importance of this tip cannot be over-emphasized. Before you even start collecting your materials listed in Tip 1, get your safety gear and use it. Safety goggles and a dust mask is a must for this facet of your fireworks project.

Fuses are used in fireworks, cannons, firearms, and many other forms of pyrotechnics. Also termed as pyrotechnic initiating device, a fuse is the part of the device that initiates the function of burning or lightning.

Visco fuse is the simplest form of the fuse consisting of the burning core of black powder coated with one or more over raps made of textile. The outer layers of the visco fuse are coated with wax or lacquer. Because of its durability and water resistance, visco fuse is one of the most popularly used fireworks fuse.

Other popular fireworks fuse is black match. It consists of a cotton string coated with black powder and glue and allows quick and easy burning of the firecrackers. For professional fireworks, quick match is also used. It is a type of black powder fuse that consists of black match covered with a loose paper wrap. On being burnt, it enables the fire to pass quickly between the devices.  Modern fireworks use electric safety fuse. An electric safety fuse lights a main fuse when activated by an electric current. This type of firework fuse consists of a pair of wires connected to another thin electric wire. When current is applied, it heats the wire which eventually ignites the main fuse and helps burn the firecracker.

Slow match, safety fuse, and flying fish fuse are also used as fireworks fuse. A slow match is an extremely slow burning fuse that consists of a hemp or cotton rope saturated with potassium nitrate and produces only a small glowing tip instead of a large flame. Safety fuse consists of a black powder core in a textile tube, covered with asphaltum and having a tough plastic outer wrapping.

A flying fish is made like a Visco fuse, but contains a metallic spark composition instead of black powder. In addition to being used as an initiator, it can be used itself for producing beautiful fireworks display.

The History of Fireworks

Fireworks today are known as a form of celebration such as on Independence Day or New Years’ day. Not only are they spectacular in how they look but also how they work. The history of fireworks is not fully known but a number of theories are suggested. One theory is believed that fireworks originated in China more than 2,000 years ago on accident. It’s said that commonly used charcoal, sulfur, and saltpeter were compressed together in a bamboo tube by a Chinese field cook. While compressed these things compressed and burned together to create an explosion. The Chinese are credited with the discovery of gunpowder, so the concept that they created the firework seems to be reasonable. Some sources do believe that fireworks originated in India.

The firecracker was the first real firework similar to what we call fireworks today. Over 1,000 years ago, a Chinese monk named Li Tian created the firecracker. The loud noise was used as a way to scare off evil spirits and ghosts then; and still today. But as time went on and the discovery of black powder was made, more complex forms of fireworks were created.

With the discovery of black powder, what we know as fireworks took on a whole new meaning. Europe and Germany lead the way with their enthusiasm for fireworks centuries ago. As the popularity grew for this dynamic display, the rage eventually spread to America. Long before the Revolutionary War, fireworks were being used as a form of celebration for important events. The first firework show was held in 1777, six years prior to whether Americans’ knew whether they would survive the war or not. Americans did survive the war, and to this day we use fireworks to celebrate our Independence Day and any other special occasion or important event.
